You can Suet!

Hubby has been saving his bacon grease for some time and storing it in the freezer. Today, I decided to make some suet, hoping that it might attract some woodpeckers and other birds to the yard. I especially hope to see a large, red headed, Pileated woodpecker. I know there are some around these parts, but I don’t see them too often.
To mix in with the heated bacon fat, I added some honey, cornmeal, crushed pecans and even a touch of eggshells—you know, in case the blue jays decide to try it. I didn’t have any birdseed to mix in, but really the woodpeckers wouldn’t want that anyway.

I poured the suet into a couple of orange peels and the left over into two plastic apple sauce cups. I was surprised at the length of time it took for the suet to harden up again, at least two hours in the cold garage.
All the suet has been nailed to our birch tree awaiting some feathered friends. This afternoon was very quiet for birds in the yard. I’ll keep an eye out tomorrow and report back if I spot anything.
